The PF-Series Flute from Amon Olorin Flutes represents an unprecedented innovation: a high-quality instrument-grade ABS resin state-of-the-art native flute at an affordable price. It has been said that only Nixon could go to China, and only Ken Light could make a plastic native flute. I guess that's true, because here it is.

Over the internet you would not be able to discern any difference between the "Sonoran" and the "Waterspirit" cedar flutes and the PF-Series. The difference in sound is quite subtle; in short, the PF flutes are a little more crisp and have a little more volume than the slightly softer and quieter cedar flutes, but the difference is small. The PF's have a sweet clear tone that you will really like.

The PF flute is a precise replica of my handmade cedar flutes and incorporates every one of the performance and aesthetic design elements I have developed in my 15 years of flutemaking. In addition, each PF comes complete with both of my most popular tunings. One is the "Sonoran"-Southern Plains tuning (G-minor) and the second slightly longer body-tube is in the "Waterspirit"-Great Lakes woodland tuning (F#-minor). With a simple sliding take-apart and reassembly action, the flute becomes essentially two different instruments, performing beautifully in two historically accurate Native tunings which are fast becoming standards for contemporary instruments.

When I originally developed the idea to make a native flute out of injection-molded plastic, there were many unknowns because it had never been done before. This idea was the result of years of thinking about how to really make the native flute accessible to anyone who wanted to become involved in this beautiful and unique musical tradition. Not only was I able to pull it off (with some very fine help from a gifted machinist and moldmaker and several other talented artisans) but the PF flute has exceeded my expectations in many ways. First things first, these flutes really have it where it counts: they play and play well. I would stack the beautiful clear voice of my PF's up against any currently made native flute. Both R. Carlos and myself have been using the PF's in many recording and performance projects. The PF's are reliable and consistent performers. Guaranteed! Read R. You may think that the PF is some kind of mass-produced item from Taiwan or something. Not so, as the parts are molded in the Rockies of Montana two valleys South of me by another family-business. Each one must be hand-assembled from the molded parts and requires 14 different hand operations before they are ready to ship. To me, the PF's are very like my handmade cedar flutes. I assemble and voice each one myself so I know they are right.

What's more the PF flute is extremely durable, waterproof etc. Perfect for taking with you on your flute expeditions. At 15 inches long when the body tubes are disassembled from the headpiece, and at only nine ounces, your wilderness flute needs are well met. No need to take chances with your expensive and precious wood flutes, throw in a PF and take your music river rafting, hiking and camping, anywhere.

For beginners, the PF is a great way to get started. Here is an inexpensive way to explore the native flute tradition, find out how accessible it really is, and have a really good quality instrument to work with. You will know what a native flute is supposed to do and can become an educated fluteplayer if you decide to shop for a really nice handmade wood flute. Plus you will always have your practice and travel flute needs at hand.

The PF-Series flute comes with complete playing instructions and fingering guide, historical and cultural information, and tips for getting the most enjoyment out of your new flute. Yes, its plastic, but it will soon feel just right in your hands because the music will fill your heart. My credo is "Everyone needs a flute". My old friend Tony Shearer, who carries that old Lakota cedar flute that his grandfather gave him, told me from the outset of this journey that his vision of the flute is that it will contribute in a special way to the healing of the people and our Earth. He laughed like a child when I showed him a PF. That's when I really knew I was on the right path. Hey, join us in this adventure and let's see what happens.

What R.C. Nakai has to say: "The PF-Series flutes are another innovation by Ken Light of Amon Olorin Flutes to offer the best sounding and most reliable Native-tuned instrument practicable at an affordable price. I have found these instruments to remain in-tune through extended playing and in varying environmental conditions that would limit the performance capability of the one-of-a-kind and more expensive wooden models. The PF-Series flute is well suited to double and triple tongueing passages and responds excellently to varying embouchure dynamics. The clarity of the pitches and the extended range of the PF-Series flute enables more varied performance and collaborative possibilities. Compositions for performance by more than one flute are now readily accomplished without the idiosyncratic eccentricity and tunings of similar hand-made flutes. Wood is a living and changing material whereas the PF-Series flutes are exact in many ways. The PF-Series flute marks another achievement in attaining the very best in reliability practicable without question. Now, I limit the hand-made flutes to special performances and use the PF's for extended work either in rehearsal, studio projects, or in long ensemble performances where time is of the essence. I highly recommend the PF-Series flute for beginners, students, teachers, and professionals alike and the enjoyment of working with a reliable, extremely versatile, affordable instrument will only add pleasure in expressing yourself in the language of music." HAPPY PF'er

"I just wanted to let you know how much I have enjoyed my flute. I wasn't sure I would like the 'plastic' flute but I wanted to try it and see if I would enjoy playing a Native American flute. Well, I have to say I LOVE it! It is so wonderful I barely have to breath in it. I was amazed. I look forward to buying the 'Little Dog' flute in the near future. Thanks so much for making such a great flute!"
